What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disorder effecting hormonal function in woman. Hormones are the messenger's of the body that basically tell it what to do, where to grow hair, how to store fat, how to ovulate, and hormones can even effect our mood. Male and female hormones work differently, males typically have more testosterone and females typically have more estrogen. Men and woman have the same hormones, just a different hormonal cocktail. The difference between a gin and tonic and a tonic and gin. Woman with PCOS have their hormonal cocktail all out of whack. The exact cause of this is somewhat unknown and there can be different degrees of symptoms. The one most woman come to me for is Hirsutism (excessive hair growth on chin, chest, and face in woman). An estimated 5 million woman in the US may have PCOS. It can be easy to miss a PCOS diagnosis, less than 50% of women with PCOS have been diagnosed. Always talk to your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

*Hirsutism

*Weight gain (specifically around the stomach area)

*Difficulty losing weight

*Absent or irregular periods

*Infertility

*Thinning hair on the head

*Cystic acne

*Cysts on ovaries

*High levels of testosterone

*Insulin resistence
